Bringing Yoga to Joshua Station

Hello Darlings!

Yoga can be incredibly therapeutic. It can help with everything from stress, to depression, to control issues and so much more. Its gives you the ability to take some time for yourself, dive inward, fight demons and better your body from the outside in and the inside out. It has been proven as useful in recovery from your darkest days whatever they might be. The lovely ladies from my yoga teacher training program and I had the incredible opportunity to bring yoga to a group of families that are in the middle of a transitional period in their lives. They are all residents at Joshua Station and are working their way from homelessness to an independent, healthy, and stable living situation.

Joshua Station is an amazing program, in their own words it “is a transformational housing program designed to help families move from unstable housing situations to permanent housing and self-sufficiency. Families will participate in a life-building program through phases that help individuals develop and reach their goals. We offer affordable housing in a safe environment and support that is provided by working with a Family Advocate weekly.” Each family needs to pass a rigorous screening process to be accepted and after being accepted attend mandatory sessions that help give them the tools to better themselves and their children.

Each of these families endured hardship, and we wanted to offer a safe space to both get in a workout and give them the chance to look inward. The theme of our class was ‘Nourishment.’ And with the wonderful turnout of mothers and their children we were offered the chance to teach the parents and kiddos separately, but with the same intention.

Getting Ready to Sprint Like Cheetahs!
It is an amazing experience to hear the laughter of children as they roar like lions demonstrating an always popular ‘lions breath’ pranayama, while their parents on the other side of the room exhale with intention.

The class was followed by a raffle of water bottles provided by our home studio Breathe Yoga Cycle and healthy treats provided by KIND. I want to thank the darlings at Philanthropy Field Trips for coordinating our visit (you can donate here) and the wonderful and passionate team at Joshua Station (you can donate here) welcoming us into their space and sharing their energy! All of the individuals we worked with make this world such a better place!
